College Credit Plus (CCP)

College Credit Plus (CCP) is Ohio's dual enrollment program that lets students in grades 7-12 earn both college and high school credits by taking courses at Ohio colleges or universities. The goal is to help students become more career-ready and succeed in post-secondary education, offering a range of options for college-ready students with little or no cost to families. Sycamore covers the cost of tuition and books for public college courses, making it free for families.

Students must notify Sycamore High School if they plan to participate in CCP. The process starts with completing an Intent to Participate form, then applying to their chosen college(s). During the application, they will find out what the college needs from the high school. After being admitted, students should stay on top of all communications from the college about next steps, like orientation, advising, and class registration.

What is College Credit Plus?

College Credit Plus (CCP) lets high school students take college courses for free and earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Students can take classes on a college campus, online, or right here at Sycamore.

Why Should You Participate?

  • Save Time: Earn college credit hours while still in high school. These credits can count toward your college degree, putting you ahead of schedule when you start college.
  • Save Money: The program covers tuition and books, helping lower future college costs.
  • Be Prepared for College: Get a taste of what college classes are like while still in the supportive environment of high school.

How Does It Work?

  • Students take CCP classes at colleges (in-person or online) or at SHS.
  • CCP classes at Sycamore are taught during the regular school day by our own teachers who are qualified to teach college-level courses.
  • You earn both high school credit and college credit for the same class. For example:
    • English Composition I (one sem. class): 3 college credits = 1 high school credit

Who Can Enroll?

CCP is open to students 7th-12th grade who meet the college’s admission requirements and are ready to take on the challenge of college-level work.

How do I Get Started? These steps are VERY IMPORTANT!

  1. Talk with your parents and school counselor about your desire to participate in College Credit Plus.
  2. Educate yourself on the College Credit Plus program by reviewing information about CCP found here and on the State of Ohio website. Complete a Letter of Intent by April 1st of the spring before you plan to take classes in the summer, fall, or following spring.
  3. Decide to which institution(s) you would like to apply and complete the required online application and forms described on their website. For instance, there is a mature content permission form that all colleges require to be signed by students and parents. Also complete the SHS Request for Documents so Sycamore knows what to provide the college on your behalf.
  4. Keep an eye on your email for communication from the college/university about whether or not you have been accepted.
  5. If accepted, follow all steps the college/university requires. This might include making a portal account, attending orientation, meeting with your advisor, or submitting more information. Each school is a little different with regard to these steps. There will also be information shared about when/how to register for classes and how to purchase books.
  6. Register for CCP classes through the college or SHS for CCP courses offered at the high school.
  7. Make sure you work hard in your CCP classes. Know that if you fail a class or withdraw after the no-fault deadline (the timeframe within which you are free to withdraw with no financial or grade-related repercussions), your family will be asked to reimburse Sycamore for the tuition for your class.

What can help me succeed in CCP courses?

  • Academic Preparedness: Consider your grades in your current classes, especially in subjects related to the CCP courses you plan to take. If you are new to CCP, consider starting with one course to gauge the academic rigor and adjust to the expectations of college-level work.
  • Time Management: Evaluate your ability to juggle coursework, extracurriculars, and personal commitments. College courses are typically more demanding, with higher expectations for independent work and time management.
  • Ability to work independently: CCP requires the student to follow through with not only academic assignments, but forms and communication. CCP students should be the driver in managing these things with support from parents as needed.
  • Communicate with your high school counselor and CCP advisor: to ensure the chosen courses align with your academic and career goals. This also helps prevent taking classes that won’t transfer or count toward high school graduation.
  • Build strong study habits to help you now and in the future: Consistent study schedules will help you, and you may need to seek help (e.g., tutoring or professor office hours). This is an important preparation for college.

Understand Policies

  • Make sure you understand the withdrawal deadlines, grade impacts, and financial responsibilities of CCP. While CCP offers great benefits, like free college credit that can save you tuition or lighten your course load later, it's important to know the risks. CCP grades appear on both your high school and college transcripts, and poor performance can impact both.

How To Apply

To be eligible to take any CCP class, students must follow these steps:
  1. Complete the Intent to participate (Electronic and Hard Copy) form. Once per year, by April 1st.
  2. Apply to a college using their CCP application. You are allowed to apply to more than one.
  3. Complete the Request for Documents form (Electronic and Hard Copy) so Sycamore can provide supporting documents to the college.
  4. Watch your email for the decision from the college. If admitted, college's directions regarding course registration, buying books etc.
  5. Consult the CCP Handbook for more information about the program and Sycamore specifics.
