The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test that provides practice for the SAT. It also gives students a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. The PSAT measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, writing skills.

Reasons for taking the PSAT:

• Receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. Students can then focus his/her preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional practice.
• Students can compare his/her test performance with that of a nationwide group of students planning to enter college.
• Enter the competition for scholarships from National Merit Scholarship Competition (grade 11).
• Help prepare for the SAT by becoming familiar with the kinds of questions and directions seen on the SAT.
• Receive information from colleges if you decide to participate in the Student Search Service.
