College Campus Visits

A key part of deciding which college to go to is finding a good fit. A great way to learn more is by actually going to visit the colleges in person. Visiting a college lets you see it up close and personal. Sure, you can read about it in brochures or online, but that only goes so far. To really understand what a college is like, you need to walk around the campus, sit in on a class, and check out the dorms.

Use this checklist for a campus visit to remind yourself of everything you want to do once you reach your destination.

Your family members can also participate in the visit and any information sessions. They can help you decide which colleges to apply to and which one to attend.

SHS allows students 4 days during the school year to visit colleges and post secondary institutions for the purpose of gaining information. 

Students must follow these steps for a college visit to count as an excused absence:

Please communicate with the Attendance Office in advance of your college visit via Parent Communication Form, parent handwritten note, or by email (hsattendance@sycamoreschools.org) so your absence can be recorded for the post-secondary institution tour (college, university, training school, etc.).

Upon returning from the college visit, you must present an official letter or documentation of the visit to the Attendance Office to be officially EXCUSED. if you have any questions, please talk to the Attendance Office Staff or Mr. Corattiyil (corattiyila@sycamoreschools.org).

Visiting the campus gives you a chance to talk to students, teachers, financial aid folks, and the admissions team. You can ask important questions like:

  • What’s the campus meal plan like? How is the food? Are there different options options?
  • Is there plenty of dorm space or is it crowded?
  • How many students are commuters? How many are campus residents?
  • Is there a health center? What mental health resources are available?
  • What's the social scene like? What kinds of activities are available?
  • What career development resources are available? What student employment opportunities are available?
