National Honor Society

NHS

Membership in the National Honor Society is open to juniors and seniors and is based upon four areas: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

  • Scholarship - must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.6.

  • Leadership - demonstrated through participation in at least three school activities and evaluations from teachers and sponsors.

  • Service - assessed through work of an extended nature in the community. Students must complete 20 hours of volunteer activities no sooner than the summer before entering 9th grade to apply for membership.

  • Character - is the fourth area required for membership. It is composed of the following elements:

    • Integrity - No recorded incidents of cheating or intentional dishonesty.

    • Positive Behavior - No record of skipping classes or knowingly violating school regulations. No record of civil offenses within the community.

    • Cooperation - Willingness to assist classmates, faculty members, etc.

    • Ethics - Consistent moral behavior.

A faculty selection committee reviews the applications from all candidates and makes recommendations for membership. Once they achieve membership status, students must continue to adhere to the above criteria and are expected to serve our school as tutors and perform other volunteer service projects.
